Simply because you’re not experiencing turbulence right now doesn’t mean you should take your seatbelt off. You never know when it will occur.
Character isn’t established by accident; it’s not grown overnight. It’s established purposefully and grown daily. The danger most of us face is in thinking that because we’re not on the brink of disaster, because we’re not as bad as others, because we’re not experiencing difficulty, we’re doing okay - not great, but good enough.
There are no lazy people who will also be people of integrity. To be a person of character requires ongoing intentionality.
We must grow our character or else we will be caught unprepared and encounter a circumstance that will tear us down, rather than build us up. We could pass the test if we would be daily about the business of investing in our character through the Word of God, the power of the Holy Spirit, the simplicity of prayer, and our submission to authority, accountability to friends, and confession of sin.
We cannot wait until the dark moments of trial and temptation have arrived to decide to change an area of our life. We must begin before. Turbulence makes you thankful you have your seatbelt on. Testing makes you thankful you have your integrity - the knowledge, the conviction, and the strength to keep you safe through to the other side.
