Our need of Jesus is deep. We can't reach that depth of understanding anymore than we can swim to the ocean's floor with a single breath in our lungs. Our own wisdom and strength will leave us gasping for air every time.
Our need of Jesus is deep. We can't fathom how much of our heart is left unexplored, unseen, unknown. Who of us by swimming could ever conquer the width, length, height, and depth of the ocean body stretching across the earth?
Our need of Jesus is deep. At the most unexpected moments, the least expected happens: our confidence in our holiness is shattered. In an instant we lose the spiritual balance and pose we've strived to perfect. The "holy ground" beneath us gives way and swallows us up. We are not where we thought we were; we are not who we thought we were.
How often do we walk in the shallows of our holiness and believe we're walking on water! Yes, our need of Jesus is deep.
But give thanks! He is patient, merciful, and kind. He comes to us, not yelling and bullying us back into conformity to His rules. He comes to us with patience in His words and with love in His eyes, though at times His words are like thunder and His eyes are like fire. He draws and leads us further into His ways, into His heart.
Our need of Jesus is deep. By wounding our pride, He can heal us with His grace. We cease to boast, "I am holy", and begin to boast, "You are holy". We can begin to thank Him that He is not like us, but that we are becoming more like Him.
How deep is our need of Him, yet not so deep that He can't fill. The ocean of our heart is but a drop in the oceans of His.
