Once my youngest son came to me at night to explain something that was bothering him. I didn't understand what he was saying, but that didn't stop me from answering. My response and my decision came out of my interpretation of his words. After I made my decision, my wife turned to me and said: That not what we was trying to say. And then she explained it to me, slowly.
Lets face it: we do not know entirely or exactly what the will of God is. As a result, we do not always know entirely or exactly what to pray for.
"For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit helps us in our weakness." (Romans 8:26) In our weakness, in the moments where we don't know what, how or why to pray, the Spirit of God intercedes and fits His prayers into ours. We then can begin to pray according to the will of God.
But it gets better. "And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God." (Rom. 8:27)
Because the mind of the Spirit intercedes for the people of God according to the will of God, when He is praying for you, praying in you, praying through you, He's NOT praying for something that's abstract or disconnected from God's will for you. Rather, He's praying entirely and exactly what IS according to God's will for you.
So, then, now Paul's words come to us with profound meaning and depth: "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose." (Rom. 8:28)
We can be assured that everything will work together for our good, NOT because we have understood all things or because we have control over all things, BUT because in the midst of "all things" the Spirit of God is lifting up prayers to God.
However prayer happens (in the form of desperation, of inaudible groaning, of whispers, of screams, of tears, of laughter, of songs, of journal entries, etc.), BECAUSE the Holy Spirit is praying in perfect alignment and in unbroken unity with God, you CAN be assured that everything WILL work together for your good, the will of God. In the mouth of the Spirit, prayer never fails.
Dear Christian, rest assured. Be at peace. Your prayers are heard, and understood. He who has unrestricted access and unlimited knowledge of your heart, He also has it of God's. The Spirit knows what you want to pray for today, though you can't put it into words. He knows what you should be praying for today, but don't.
